In simple terms, a trackback is a cross-reference between two different blog posts/articles by the means of a backlink. Here's a Spunky Jones scenario, that will assist you to further understand what trackbacks are:
Your reading the Spunky Jones Ethical - SEO Blog, and Spunky has published a post about his recent trip to Elk River in his trusty but rusty Spunky Mobile. The post is called, "Spunky Jones, Discovers Phone Booth for two in Elk River, MN." The article is about his adventures visiting the town of Elk River, Minnesota and and spending the weekend for two in a luxury phone booth.
Please note: - This isn't something that everybody should try, believe me! -
Now, let's imagine for one minute that you found that blog post to be interesting, and you decided to write about the Spunky Jones blog post and his adventure in downtown Elk River, Minnesota.
Next, you write your blog post/article and create a hyperlink within the article that links directly to "Spunky Jones, Discovers Phone Booth for two in Elk River, MN." post. Next, you need to publish your post, and that will inform Spunky Jones that you wrote about his blog post.
Spunky, will now receive a notification of your trackback and has the option to approve or disapprove of it. Once it is approved, the trackback creates a comment on the Spunky blog post with a backlink to your new blog post. Now, Spunky Jones readers will see your comment and may click on your link to see what you have to say on the subject as well. ( Great way to get extra web traffic )
If you are using WordPress, then it is very simple to create a trackback. Just follow the easy steps in the WordPress editor.
The downside of trackbacks is spam. Many popular blogs are plagued with spammers who try to increase their link popularity by linking to sites with high pagerank. You can easily avoid most spam, by setting your trackback to be approved manually. If you wish to avoid spam all together, then you most likely will want to disable trackbacks completely.
I also wanted to add, that Spunky Jones did make the trip over to visit the ball field where the famous local tough guy, Pete Bock played softball, drank beer and beat up lot's of people! I must say, it was most frightful and those of you who have weak hearts, should avoid seeing that landmark in Dayton, Minnesota.
