        • Website Promotion, an ongoing Marketing process for your Website

        • - Building Blocks for Effective SEO and Website Promotion - Part 6 of 10

        • Credit Crunch SeriesMarketing your website should be an ongoing process that you should monitor and measure to make sure you're making process. Furthermore, always be prepared to change tactics if they do not work.

There are many free strategies to employ for internet marketing and we will cover some of those here to stretch your budget further.

The first thing to do once your site is live is to submit it to the search engines and directories. The majority of these are free, so you should not need to pay for submission, but you will find that many of the free directories now ask for a backlink in return for your submission.

Before you start submitting to the search engines and directories, it is a good idea to create your descriptions and list your major keywords. Many of the directories will ask you for the same information over and over again – the only difference being that the number of characters allowed for your descriptions and the number of keywords or categories permitted will differ.

Save your descriptions in a file because as you find more places to submit over time, it will save you re-inventing the wheel. You can also test which are the most effective descriptions or which keywords bring the best results and the most traffic.

You must also record where you have submitted your website to avoid re-submitting, which can get you banned in some cases.

When submitting to directories, firstly avoid using an automatic submission tool, and take a little time to ensure that you have chosen the most appropriate category or categories – some sites allow multiple category submission and it's worth getting maximum exposure where you can.

Investigate whether there are any niche search engines and directories that focus on your subject area, industry sector, or geographic region. These often deliver great results with targeted traffic, but may require extra work to find. Some of the big general directories have considerable marketing budgets and employ SEO experts to deliver great results, so you will find them (usually quite high in the SERPS) by searching on your keywords. If necessary, add “+ directory” to find more of them.  Using long tail terms can find many more.

Think carefully about the potential benefits of a paid submission, especially if you have limited marketing funds, particularly at the outset.

Your marketing budget should include a percentage for Pay Per Click, although if you are on a tight budget, remember that organic search still delivers better results than paid search. PPC can be a difficult strategy to get to grips with so it is worth investigating whether to use an expert.

Initially though you should begin to see quality traffic from free submissions if your website is correctly optimized, and the paid submissions and keyword bids can come later.
