Is PageRank, just plain Old History?

When I first started out blogging, I was mentored to follow certain criteria as a way to gauge my blogs popularity. It has been about 4 years, and I followed such criteria such as PageRank and Alexia rankings. However, in the past year I have seen that Google is revamping things a bit and PR rankings are jumping all over the place. I have learned that PageRank isn't the most important factor to consider as a means of determining popularity and success.

Recently, Susan Moskwa stated that Google has removed their PageRank feature from their Webmaster Tools. It isn't much of a shock to many that this would eventually happen. Furthermore, is had been stated for a very long time that people shouldn't focus so much on PageRank. Susan Moskwa also stated that PageRank isn't the most important metric to follow, contrary to what most people believe. It was removed because Google felt that it was silly to tell people not to pay so much attention to PageRank and then provide them with the information. It appears that Google was implying that PageRank had some important, and that they were encouraging people to look at it.

Therefore, it appears that PageRank has been devalued, to a degree, or two. The big question now is, what is one to do next? It is quite simple, work on making your content unique and build your reputation as an authority in your niche. Furthermore, search engine optimization isn't dead as many are stating.  SEO is still part of the equation. However, you must write for people and don't keyword stuff your content because that will degrade your content.
