How Do I get Listed in the DMOZ Directory? This has to be one of the most frequently asked questions by webmasters and site owners, on the World Wide Web. Furthermore, why is getting your website listed in the DMOZ Directory so important? In this post, I will explain some factors to consider if you are seeking a DMOZ website listing in their Directory.
For the most part, the DMOZ Directory is well aged, established, trusted and considered as an authority source of information. However, there are many that will totally disagree with this. If we look at SEO ranking software, you'll find that a DMOZ listing contributes to your overall SEO score. If we look at search engine rankings, a website listed in DMOZ seems to outrank sites that aren't listed. However, the sites should be compared to other sites within the same niche, age, and amount of backlinks.
To get listed in the DMOZ Directory, you need to think about relevance. Therefore, you need to select a category that is relevant to your site's niche. I suggest that you search the DMOZ Directory with your keywords and keyword phrases. Once you have done this, you will get a better idea of which type of sites are listed in their categories. Furthermore, you will be able to cross reference which keywords fix best for those categories as well.
Next, you will need to decide if you are going to submit your main page URL or submit one of your inner pages. From what I have seen so far, you are better off to submit your homepage URL. My thoughts are that main page URLs are shorter and easier to read, compared to long URLs. This is based on my personal opinion and my observations seen at the DMOZ Directory.
Meta Tags:
You will need to submit your meta tags, which consist of your title and description. It appears that the success rate in DMOZ is much higher if you submit your legal Domain name, as your title.
Example:
My legal Domain name is "spunkyjones.com" therefore, I would submit "Spunky Jones," as my title.
If you look at my web page title in your web browser, you will see the following: "SEO Blog - Spunky Jones SEO Optimization Techniques." This is what the SEO industry considers as a keyword rich title. Therefore, if I wanted to submit the following: "Spunky Jones - SEO Optimization" I would need the following Domain, spunkyjonesseooptimization.com or spunky-jones-seo-optimization.com to make my submission. As you can see from my examples, using hyphens to separate your words, makes it much easier to read. I would select the one that is easy to read. I suggest this because that the search engines and directories want the best experience for their users. Since it is easier to read, it makes for a logical choice. If your Domain name is short, then hyphens aren't as important to use. However, "hypens are used as seperators and search engines can extract your keywords much better.
The description is very important, and it should be short and to the point. I would avoid your typical marketing messages in the description. It is said that the description tag should be no longer than 130 to 150 characters long. Write your description in sentence form and avoid over usage of keywords. No SPAM!
Next, you need to provide an e-mail address that is associated with your legal Domain name.
Example:
somebody@spunkyjones.com
Not use e-mail addresses from your Gmail or Yahoo accounts. This tends to look more like some type of spam. You'll have better success, using a email that is associated with your Domain name.
After you have applied all of the above, it is time to wait and be patient. It could take a few months or better to get reviewed by a DMOZ editor. However, after a few months, I usually resubmit my site all over again.
Additional notes:
These are my guidelines, however, I can't give you a guarantee that you will get listed.
