Building blocks for SEO

Once you have submitted to the search engines, you need to develop a website marketing strategy using a combination of methods for maximum success. What works for one website may not work for another, so your website marketing strategy will be personal and you will adapt and change over time.

Backlinks are vital in order to help establish the popularity of your site with the search engines, and also to lead traffic to your site from other websites. Effective traffic driving backlinks can be difficult to find – don’t expect overnight success, this is a long-term strategy.

You will need to have links pages on your site where you can place backlinks, but you don’t need to have all links on a single page. You might include links within or at the end of articles where they relate to the content, or on product pages if the link is to a review site or a white paper about the product.

You should establish backlinks with websites which have a Google Page Rank of 3 or more, but it may be that you find a website with a low PR whose audience complements yours perfectly and these are always valuable. Backlinks are not just about search engine marketing, they are also a strong traffic driver.

Remember always to have external links opening in a new window, or you will lose traffic to other websites unless your visitor hits the back button. Furthermore, it is a great idea to include a tracking URL in links so that you show up in the reciprocal site’s traffic stats. This can take the form of http://www.example.com/?yoursite This will not affect where the link points to, but if you regularly drive traffic to a specific website, they will notice you in their stats, and you never know what benefits or contacts that may bring.

Try to avoid getting backlinks from link farms or in a bad neighborhood. These can do more harm than good, short and long term.

When trying to contact a website about a possible backlink, it is worth finding the most appropriate place on the site for a reciprocal link before sending an email. This will show that you have taken the time to look at their site, rather than just sending out a templated mail, and remember that the recipient of the email will be an individual so be friendly and courteous. Establishing a relationship with those sites with which you have backlinks can lead to further promotion opportunities, and can be well worth the time and effort.
