When you'll looking to increase traffic to your web site, it is important not to focus solely on the search engines, forums, social networking and blog commenting. Another important place to submit your site is to web directories, which will get you that extra exposure and web traffic. Web directories are considered as the old faithful, when it comes to link building for targeted web traffic.
There are thousands of web directories across the Web, and while some may index sites across a wide variety of categories, others are specialist, subject or sector specific. This can be by industry, topic, geographical region; there are also directories for images, music, video and other multimedia.
However, some directories hold more value than others in driving quality traffic to your site, and additionally, some request a reciprocal link, or even payment for a listing, so check the requirements before submission.
Do not use an auto submit tool for submission, as each directory is different, and the category an auto-submit tool may choose may not be the most appropriate across all directories.
Choose your category with care. Although this can be a time-consuming process, it is well worth the effort as those searching for information will drill down to the category they feel is right for their search. Therefore, you need to understand who may be searching for you, and which categories they would use.
The most important thing about directory submission is making sure that your keywords and description are accurate and meet the submission guidelines. For instance, the number of characters in the description may differ. Before you start submitting, it is a good idea to create a spreadsheet or similar to record your submissions, descriptions and keywords to make cutting and pasting them an easy task. You can also try different descriptions to see which attract the most traffic.
To find directories to submit to, type “web directories + keywords” into a search engine, and you will be amazed at how many you find!
Additional Comments:
* Having a link in a web directory in a category which is closely related to your niche and that has pagerank is the number one goal, because his will get you targeted web traffic.
* Keep in mind that PR0 doesn’t really mean absolute 0. It’s a value between 0 and 1. If the directory looks like it has potential, it may be worth submitting to.
* When you submit to a directory which requires a fee, make sure that the fee is for the review of your site. This way you are not buying a link, you are purchasing a review. If your site meets the guidelines of the directory, the chances are very good that the editor will accept your site in their web directories index.
* You want your links to appear natural, so you want to use different combination's of your title and description when submitting to web directories. If you don't do this, you could get flagged by the search engines because your links are unnatural. The goal is to get quality links and don't make this big mistake of going for quantity. If you acquire too many links too fast, that can also get you flagged by the search engines for being unnatural.
* The age of your site will determine the amount of new links that can be obtained. When I register a new Domain, I usually let it age for six months to eight months before launching the site. Many people will just put up a single page with a title, description and some page content for the search engines. They will also put a link up on one of their established sites for the search engines to find. This way your site usually ends up in the search engines index and gets crawled. Then, when you are ready to launch your site, things will happen at a much faster pace and you will probably avoid the Google sandbox which most new sites get caught up in.
