Today I thought that I would write more of a roundup post for the Spunky Jones SEO Blog. The blog post is about what I have been up to this past week on SJ. Furthermore, it will also cover what I have on my up and coming agenda on Spunky Jones!
SEO Doctor FireFox Plugin:
First of all, I discovered a very useful SEO plugin for the Firefox browser. It is called, the SEO Doctor. I found it to be very helpful to get a general idea of SEO factors that every web site should have. Looking at my score, which scored 100%. Actually, all of my active sites scored 100% and that didn't shock to me. This is because I have a fair amount of experience with SEO optimization. Furthermore, the score is based on some very basic search engine optimization factors which most SEO people/experts should know.
As I started to surf the Internet, and the plugin displays an SEO score for every site that I visited. This was actually very helpful, and it allowed me to get a quick glance of the sites overall optimization. However, I was really surprised of how many SEO related sites that didn't score higher than 75%. This was a little shocking, since these sites belonged to individuals claiming to be experts.
Overall, I give the SEO Doctor plugin a big thumbs up! I highly recommend that you install the plug and give it a try. I believe that you'll find it very helpful to give you a good reference with your SEO.
Spunky Jones SEO Blog gets a look over:
I took a closer look at the Spunky Jones SEO blog today. I decided that I needed to work on a better SEO linking structure. I felt that my link structure was lacking and it wasn't utilizing my keyword terms very effectively. Therefore, I started an SEO Tips page and added sub pages under it. Since this addition is at the top of the right hand side of the page. It should improve the amount of page views that I receive on this blog. This is because the content is clearly within the visual range of my readers. Furthermore, this should also help to improve my search engine rankings. However, time will tell if I am correct on this call.
I also made some changes to my heading tags on Spunky Jones. Starting with the main page, I have one H1 heading and the post titles utilize the H3 heading. Previously, I didn't use a tag for the article titles on that page. This is because the h2 heading is usually repeated too many times, and I didn't want to abuse the heading tag. After doing some research, I saw that many of the top SEO bloggers use the H3 heading for their post titles on the main page. Therefore, since the H3 is having less value, I felt that it could be used safely for display post titles on that page.
Spunky Jones Site Loading Times:
I also worked this last week on improving my sites overall loading speed. I used the FireBug and YSlow plugin for the Firefox web browser to do most of the testing. The results were an increase of about 1/2 for page loading speeds. I found this gave me an edge over my competitors loading speeds. Therefore, I am quite happy with the overall results of these plugins!
Spunky Jones WordPress Themes:
I spend time working on the WordPress themes that I want to release very soon. However, since the 3.0 version was just released, I am holding off for a little while. I need some extra time to test the themes to see if they will be compatible with the latest version of WordPress. Furthermore, I still need to figure out how to make the designer credit in the footer appear on just the main page, instead of being a sitewide link.
Alexa Rankings are climbing:
My overall web traffic is climbing this last month. I also noticed my Alexa rankings are getting close to breaking the 100K mark in the next month or so. With this increase of traffic, comment spam and content scrappers have also increased a bunch. I had to look into other ways to combat these issues. I turned to HoneyPot for a partial spam solution. The plugin stops spammers and automated bots, via HoneyPot http:BL (blacklist). I have had the plugin running for a couple of days and it has cut down the amount of spam that I receive. However, it did need a little tweaking from the default setting of 30 to 14.
Problems found on Spunky Jones:
I found that my pageranker seo tool quit working, so I removed it from the site temporally. However, I did find out that there is an upgrade that needs to be applied and that should take care of business.
Overall, I had a productive week and nothing to big that I needed to outsource. However, I do have a need for a couple of Squidoo Lenses that I may outsource.
