WordPress has a nice built in feature that allows you to customize your permalink structure for search engine optimization. However, the default permalink structure isn't SEO friendly. Furthermore, it isn't advisable to keep if you want to improve your search engine ranking results for your blog posts and pages. The biggest problem is, if you started out with the default permalink structure and want to change it, you would end up breaking all of your existing links. Therefore, you would lose PageRank that you have acquired for your posts and pages. Furthermore, you would lose traffic from the search engines because those links would be no longer valid!
However, there is a very cool plugin for WordPress that allows you to change your permalinks without breaking your existing links. The plugin is, "Dean's Permalink Migration" and it will create a 301 redirect that instructs the search engines that you have changed your linking structure. The result is, you won't lose any PageRank or search engine traffic by using this plugin.
The PageRank of your site can drastically impact how high you are ranked in the search engines and how much traffic you generate. The last thing that you want to do is, lose the incoming traffic your web site was generating. By informing the search engines of this permalink structure change, you can maintain your PageRank and continue to receive as much traffic as you had been prior to the change.
Now that you know what to do to avoid losing traffic, the next step is downloading the permalink migration plugin. Once you have downloaded the permalink plugin, you'll need to unzip and upload the plugin into your wp-content/plugins/directory. From there, you just need to navigate to your plugin management page and activate it from your admin panel.
It is a simple process that can have a significant effect on your business and the amount of traffic you receive. Furthermore, there is no need to have visitors going to web pages that are invalid.
Additional instructions for selecting your permalink structure:
You will need to change your permalink structure, so navigate to Permalinks. You are given four choices and the best one for SEO, is Custom! For permalink structure to use, I suggest either /%category%/%postname%/ or /%postname%/. If you are unsure of your category structure, and you may change it later, most people would select /%postname%/. If you are experienced and have your categories in place, and they are permanent, then select /%category%/%postname%/.
