Optimized BacklinksThere is a lot of focus on building backlinks to gain popularity these days. However, are those backlinks actually returning anything to you as far as SEO value? The problem is, the majority of people don’t know how to optimize their backlinks for the search engines. In this blog post, I will cover some basic optimizing techniques to get the most juice out of your backlinks.

For those of you that don’t know what backlinks are. I strongly suggest that you search this blog for the terms, “backlinks” and “backlink”. However, here is a basic breakdown of a backlink. A backlink is a link from another website pointing back to your website. That link, casts a vote for your website. The search engines use those incoming links to determine your rankings in the search results.

Typical backlink example for a non optimized backlink:
Spunky Jones SEO Blog

The above backlink is not optimized. The anchor text used here targets an obscure keyword phrase. While (Spunky Jones SEO Blog) contains valid keywords, the problem is that I already rank #1 for “Spunky Jones”. Furthermore, most people looking for SEO blogs from the search engines will search using the term, “SEO blog”. Therefore, you want your anchor text to be “SEO Blog” because it is straight to the point and relevant.

Better backlink example of a well optimized backlink:

Using “SEO Blog” as your anchor text, will help you to rank for that keyword term. It is a highly competitive keyword term, unlike “Spunky Jones” which is used for name branding. Using this type of backlink format will be more effective to boost your search engine rankings for your targeted keywords and key phrases.
