Backlink building is necessary if you want to get the most value out of your search engine optimization. However, did you know that backlinks have different values according to their link types and depending on their location? The usual places these links are located are, the header, left sidebar, right sidebar, footer and the content section. It is also said that the footer links, contain the least amount of value by most SEO optimization experts. Furthermore, I can't really say that is true, but I do know that they get the least amount of exposure. With that said, I would not consider a footer link if you want to increase your web traffic flow! Footer links are more commonly used for designer and sponsor credits.
Web site links that are in the sidebar are more desirable to have in comparison to footer links. Since most of these links are displayed as sitewide links, they seem to present more problems than they are worth. It is my opinion that these types of links were widely abused to manipulate PageRank and no longer contain the value as they once did. Google has put more weight on relevancy to determine link value. Therefore, pages that contain related keywords and keyword phrases with anchored text will return the best results for backlinks.
There is a new tend that more people prefer links that are in the content section. The logic here is, that people visit the site for content and that content is fuel that drives the search engines. Since Google places so much emphasis on content, it is more probable that the content section will yield the highest returns and visibility as far as link value goes. Therefore, this could be the main reason that Google gives out penalties to bloggers who write paid posts and include do-follow links back to the advertiser!
As I have said in previous posts on this topic, it is best to have a mixture of backlinks. Don't focus solely on do-follow links because it will trip a flag in the search engines if you do. You need to remember that no-follow links, can deliver high volume levels of targeted traffic to your web site! Furthermore, when you purchase banner ads, you should consider placing them in different locations on web sites. Therefore, you should mix things up a bit to make them appear more natural and seek out quality links over quantity!
