When designing and building your website or blog, it is important to ensure that it is built on a strong foundation. This series focuses on the necessary building blocks to help your venture to success. Without considering all aspects, and doing your homework, it will be difficult to attract enough traffic to generate a steady flow of money. The proper website design and layout is needed, and a healthy marketing strategy will help to convert your visitors into buyers.
Before designing and building a blog or website for your business idea, it is important to research who is the competition in your chosen sector. There will be little point investing time and money in a category or niche that is already oversupplied, or where you will be unable to deliver the products and services at competitive prices.
In order to discover the situation in the sector proposed, you will need to conduct competitive analysis. This should start with searching the Internet to see which businesses are active, which products are selling, and the price point for these products. It may be that your products are unique, in which case you need to look at how to position and market these products.
During this process, you will have a great opportunity to create your keyword list, which will prove of inestimable value for content creation and search engine optimization. You should begin to note down keywords you use to find the competition, and the keywords which show up on their websites.
Using Google, you can discover how many competitors there are for specific products and services by typing your keywords into Google's advanced search. Change the number of results per page to 100, and click "search". On the search engine results page, go to the final page of the results and scroll down to see “In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the xxx already displayed”.
The lower the number of similar entries, the less competition you will have. You should also look in the search engine results to see which large companies and brands you are up against, as well as the smaller companies in the marketplace. Take a look at their websites and note keywords they may be using, whether you like the design and functionality of the site, how easy it is to buy, their product prices etc.
Research the industry and check any industry publications. These can point out upcoming trends as well as who your competitors may be, marketing opportunities etc. Look for product and company reviews to assess consumer opinion.
Bookmark all interesting sites. You can never do enough competitive research and you will visit many websites in the process so it will help if you can find them again!
Other great places to look are the auction sites such as eBay. Check completed listings to see what price products are actually selling for, and how many sellers there are.
Whilst you are involved in this research, keep an eye open for any under served niches. There may be a particular area where there are limited products or services that could provide an opportunity for you. Whether you plan to set up an e-commerce site or a blog, the more you know about the sector, the better.
