Meta tags are nothing more than HTML tags that describe your web page content. They are placed into the "head" section of your web site pages. When used correctly, you can gain higher ranking positions in the search engines. It takes little effort to implement and there is much to gain by doing it!
When you place keywords in these tags, it will add weight to your keyword or keyword phrases. This is done to rank higher in the search engines for your most important keywords and keyword phrases. Since many search engines use these tags in their ranking algorithm, it is still important to use these meta tags.
Here is an example of the two meta tags we are talking about:
<META name="description" content="include a description of your page content and include a few keywords">
<META name="keywords" content="a, list, of, your, most, important, keywords">
Your meta tag description shouldn't duplicate your title tag. You need to describe the contents of the page. The length of the tag, should be 150 characters or less. However, there are some search engines that make use of this tag with 200 characters in it. Depending on the search engines you are optimizing for will determine the length of the tag. Furthermore, you want to avoid getting your tag cut off. You want your message to be short and precise!
As I said, search engines will vary on the usable size of your meta tags. Therefore, pay attention to search engine results to get an idea of the allowed length for each search engine you are optimizing for. Furthermore, avoid using your keywords in your keyword tag more than three times, any more than that you will be risking getting penalized!
