For many WordPress bloggers, the alt tag and title tag raises many questions when dealing with images. Should you use both image attributes, is it redundant to use both the alt tag and title tag and what effect for search engine optimization (SEO) does it have on the search engines, mainly Google?
The alt image tag attribute contains text that is used to show alternate information when the image isn't accessible. This text is shown to your visitors if you have specified the alt text attribute, otherwise a blank box is shown with an empty icon which mainly depends on which browser you are using. Furthermore, the alt text is usually shown when you hover your mouse over the image.
Google, doesn't see the images directly. Therefore, the alt image information is given a greater importance, and it carries more weight for search engine optimization. Furthermore, alt attribute is required to be HTML valid according to WC3. Being HTML valid, can also have a positive value on SEO.
The image title tag attribute is used to display additional information about the image for your users. When the user hovers over an image that contains the title text, it will pop up for them. However, there doesn't seem to be much on the subject if it has any effect on the search engines for search engine optimization.
Comments:
It is very important to use the alt attribute for your images because of the additional bump it will give you for SEO. However, the image title attribute is more for improving the user experience. It is clearly your choice. However, it is recommended by W3C to use both.
