I would estimate about 80% of links that webmasters put up these days, are not natural. Therefore, this is a very good reason that one should pay close attention to your site design and write quality content that is unique. The more unique your site and content are, the better changes are that people will link to you naturally!
Things to consider in your backlink campaign are to vary your anchor text so that they contain different text. If you build 100 links, and they point to the same page, and also contain the same anchor text, this is going to set off a flag. If your links that are not natural, and they are nothing more than a link scheme, the search engines could consider these links a spam, and you could get penalized and maybe even de-indexed from Google!
Link building is very important and a necessity for every site owner. However, if you build your back links manually, don’t over do it! Otherwise, you could get tagged a being a spammer!
