Link building is essential for SEO, if you want to rank well in the search engines. This is a topic that most SEO people agree upon, so I won’t go into detail of link building. However, this blog post will explain the importance of link diversity and why it is needed.

The simple truth is that you need a natural looking link profile. This is of the utmost importance to the search-bots. If the search-bots, find that a big percentage of your links are coming from a particular site or niche source, it’s not hard to figure out that your hands are involved. Once they find that you are involved and the links aren’t natural, it can be all downhill from there! You could even get dropped from the search engine’s index or suffer penalties.

Looking back a few years ago, search engines weren’t as focused on link diversity. However, changes in their algorithm, focus a lot more on link authority and trust. Therefore,  don’t just jump on the band wagon and start building new backlinks quite yet. There are a few things that you need to be aware of before you build new links.

Basic guidelines to follow when building backlinks:
1. Build your backlinks from different Domains: You will get more out of tens links from ten different sites, rather than ten links from one site.
2. Stay away from sitewide links. Sitewide links are fading fast and Google isn’t fond of them. Especially, if they are text links!
3. Don’t focus on just one type of site. Get links from different types of sites to mix things up a bit. If you submit to directories only, you could get flagged because it doesn’t look natural.
4. Build links on sites with different IP Addresses. You want to stay away from sites that share the same IP address. They don’t carry as much weight value and are often associated with link farms and bad neighborhoods.
5. Don’t build all of your backlinks to your main page. You need to do some inner linking to other pages in your website. This is often referred to as deep linking.
6. Link Relevancy. If your niche is “SEO Optimization” don’t get links on sites that aren’t related to your niche. Your backlinks need to be related to your niche to carry weight for SEO.
7. Using proper Anchor text. Learn to use proper anchor text for your backlinks. Your anchor text needs to be related to your site’s niche of the topic of the page that the link points to.

Applying these simple steps will help you to get more SEO power out of your backlinks. Furthermore, your backlinks will appear more natural to the search engines, and you should start seeing improvements in your search engine rankings!
