Most shared hosting plans, only provide you with a shared IP address. Typically, the IP address is shared with other hosting accounts on the same web server. The problem with sharing an IP address is, it could be shared with hundreds of other accounts. If one of those web sites that you are sharing a IP with gets flagged by the search engines, it could spell trouble for you. Therefore, to avoid any potential problems, I tend to select hosting providers that can provide dedicated IP addresses. A dedicated IP address usually only costs $2.00 per month.
There is an ongoing debate that among the SEO world that dedicated IP delivers better search engine rankings and PageRank. However, the majority tends to agree that having a dedicated IP, shouldn't shouldn't make any difference to the search engines. I tend to disagree with the majority, mainly from past experience.
Being a former web design and web hosting provider, I have seen more evidence that sites with static IP, also known as (fixed or dedicated) tend to rank higher in the search engines. Furthermore, with the push on quality content, authority site status, loading speeds, site trust, Domain age, a fixed IP could very well add to your website credentials!
Therefore, it is my opinion that you should purchase a fixed IP address one with your hosting account. It is the best solution to avoid penalization for being in a bad neighborhood with adult and spam sites. Furthermore, it is a little extra insurance that offers you some protection in those rare situations.
