If you change your category structure or rename your permalinks, you'll end up with broken links. Therefore, this method is much harder to keep under control without breaking your links.
I have tried both methods on Spunky Jones to inner link my blog posts. I decided it was best to let a plugin do the work for me. I found that it consumed way too much time to do this manually. Furthermore, by using a plugin, you won't end up with a bunch of broken links.
Inner linking your articles together, tends to improve your ranking positions for those articles as well. Another method to increase your pageviews on your site is to use the "Popular Posts" plugin on your sidebar. It is very important to place this towards the top of your page, so it is in plain sight of your readers. First time visitors, will be more inclined to look at your popular posts. This gives them an idea of what your audience niche and their interests.
