If you are using link farms to artificially inflate your PageRank, you could end up a creek without a paddle. Google has policies specifically set in place for such methods that utilize link farms to increase PageRank! Furthermore, you should clearly avoid sites offering link services that automatically setup link exchanges. You will find that most of these links are hidden by the means of CSS, that are only visible to search engines and not people. However, because search engines can’t render CSS, the hidden links are added to your link popularity. Furthermore, your PageRank will actually increase, but are you willing to pay the price if you get caught?
Google, won’t penalize you for having a link in a link farm. It would be unfair if website owners were penalized on this basis, because you have no control who’s linking to you. Right? It would also be disturbing if your competitors could add your site to a link farm and destroy you! Therefore, Google won’t penalize you, unless you are caught red handed using link farms to gain link popularity.
Google, can penalize you if your site contains links to link farms, and/or if your site contains hidden links. The truth is, you can actually be penalized for adding links from sites that are in bad neighborhoods on your web site.
Additional thoughts:
As you can see, there is a loop hole which opportunists can use to exploit the usage of link farms. However, the problem with links farms have too many out-going-links to increase your Pagerank effectively. As Google improves their methods detecting blackhat SEO, its just a matter of time before people are caught using these types of methods!
