If you want a successful online marketing campaign, it will take more than having the essential on page SEO elements. You'll need to be active in link building as well, if you want to rank well in the search engines. However, this is one of the most over looked aspects that many online marketing campaigns fall short of.
Last year Google had stated that submitting to directories such as, Yahoo and DMOZ were great way to start your link building campaign off with. Unfortunately, Goggle removed their statement and that started a debate about the value of directory submissions. Furthermore, many people debated that Google considers directory submissions made by SEO firms to be the same as "paid links".
It is my belief that Google pulled the plug to avoid another round with phpLD link directories. A few years back phpLD directories were booming and greatly abused by many that purchased paid links for the sole purpose of passing the Google juice. (Passing PageRank to be exact!) Google pulled the plug, and tons of link directory owners lost their PageRank, got de-indexed in the several months to come. Therefore, if Google endorsed submitting to directories, it could start another phpLD avalanche.
In the past couple of years, I have noticed a small amount of phpLD directories that survived. Many of them have Google sitelink authority and good main page and inner PageRank. Therefore, some directories still have value for link building. However, it may not be as much as it once carried.
Directories are helpful to get your new site in the search engines index. Usually, if you find a directory that is well age, established with PageRank and authority status, it takes a few days to get into Google's index. If directories have no link value, Google certainly wouldn't include new sites that are submitted to phpLD type directories in their own index that quickly.

i can understand google's point of view and from most people. i recently started my first directory just to see what it would be like and what i could make of it. the more work i put into it, the more i come up reading stories like this one. i'm hoping that those of us with good intentions on helping the community will still succeed while those that are just using the directory as "link juice" falter.
It's a long and hard road being a directory owner. Only the strong survive and the money isn't that good as well. It seems that a directory isn't taken seriously until your Alexa ranking is under 100k, and you have a PageRank of PR4 or higher.
To me, traffic is the key and the rest is a bonus. Google has made it much harder to be a successful directory owner. Therefore, the people who put up directories just to make some quick cash won't stick around for long. It's a long and hard road being a directory owner. However, if you are dedicated and stick to it, you could end being one of the few directories that become successful.
