        • - Building Blocks for Effective SEO and Website Promotion - Part 5 of 10

        • Building blocks for SEOThe first and most important thing to remember when you are creating content for your web site is, to keep your keyword list in front of you at all times.

Many webmasters and site owners make a very basic mistake in their copy-writing and creating content process. You should never forget to include keywords and keyword phrases from your keyword list, which will help make the website easier to find on the search engines, and additionally to show to your website visitors that they are in the right place for the information they are looking for.

So, the rules are to write content for the search engines ie search engine optimized, but always remember that the search engines do not buy products!

Writing flowery prose that sells your products is all well and good as long as it answers the questions your visitor will be asking when they arrive on your website. The most important of these is WIIFM – What's In It For Me. Your product or business may be exactly what they are looking for, but you need to ensure that they understand the benefits for them within moments of arriving on your site.

You need to keep content focused and simple. Each blog post or website page should focus on one topic where possible as the search engines use certain algorithms to understand your 'theme' and index your pages accordingly. Write your content first, and then go back over it for search engine optimization. Make sure your keywords, and in particular long tail terms, are included in sufficient quantity but never lose sight of who will be reading the text – your potential customer. The information in your copy should first and foremost make sense to the reader and achieve the required aim.

Search engine optimization should not lead to you sacrificing good sales copy and failing to achieve your primary purpose – to make sales, engage your reader, trigger a response with a call to action etc.

Your website will need to be regularly updated, which is why a blog is so useful because you can make frequent short posts without it becoming too onerous or time-consuming. Adding news, short articles, new products, offers etc will encourage the search engines to index your site more regularly.

Every page on your website should be optimized from the outset. This includes page titles, headings, meta tags, alt img tags and visible text. Your template should make this easy, and  meta tags and page titles should be specific to the content of that page, rather than generic to the whole site.

Where possible, your content should be unique to your website. However, there are occasions when reproducing articles from other sites can be productive eg bringing content to the attention of your site visitors that may be of interest to them, or if a joint venture with another site will be of benefit. However, the search engines do not look particularly kindly on duplicate content so do not reproduce too much from other websites.

And remember: content is king. The rest of the web is only one click away so provide high quality, informative and interesting content that achieves its purpose.
