Writing articles is one of the most effective free strategies. Article marketing and content syndication helps you to establish yourself as an expert in your field by placing your content on other websites or distributing it through RSS. It also gathers backlinks for you, so it is important to remember to include a resource box in every article with a link back to your website.
A resource box should include the author's name (this is surprisingly frequently omitted!), your URL, and an author bio, which should be one to three lines long. Although you may decide to include your achievements, it is better to use this space to sell yourself and your expertise in order to lead into a call to action eg download a free white paper or eBook. This will enable you to harvest email addresses and grow your mailing list for further use and follow-ups.
There are many websites which take articles such as ezinearticles, and many content publishers who use RSS feeds to find the content for their sites, so there are plenty of distribution channels. However, because article marketing has grown in popularity over the year, and is frequently used as a SEO strategy, there is a glut of low quality articles out there now.
When planning an article, it is important to think of it as a vehicle to primarily attract new readers and visitors to your site by showing them you know your industry and sharing your expertise, rather than purely as an SEO exercise. However, this does not mean you should omit optimizing the article for your keywords, and you can also include one or two major keywords in the resource box should you wish.
RSS (which stands for Really Simple Syndication) has been an under-used technology until the last couple of years, when it has been adopted by many blogging applications to deliver content to subscribers. However, there are quite a few websites whose content comes directly from RSS feeds and these are well worth locating. The obvious example is news sites but there are also content sites where you can enter the URL of your RSS feed and the content you publish is served directly to the site.
