Avoiding the pitfalls in search engine optimization is very important, especially if you’re a beginner in the world of SEO. No matter what steps you’ll take, there is no way to avoid making some mistakes along your way. In this blog post, “SEO for beginners – common search engine optimization mistakes”, I will address some of the SEO pitfalls that you want to avoid.
1. Avoid keyword stuffing in your title and heading tags. Using the same keyword more two times is a sure way to lose keyword relevance. Furthermore, you could experience a drop in your search engine rankings.
2. If you aren’t using a XML sitemap, it is time to create one and submit to the three major search engines. Providing a sitemap will help the search engines discover more content from within site.

* Yahoo
* Bing
3. Keyword density importance has changed a bit in the last couple of years. You need to use related words with your targeted keywords. Avoid keyword stuffing for obtain a high keyword density, it isn’t as effective as it use to be.
4. Don’t over use your H1 heading tags. There is no need to have more than one per post page. For instance, on Spunky Jones SEO Blog, I have one H1 heading tag one the main page and my article titles use the H3 tag. One my individual post pages, the title is an H1 tag.
5. Don’t forget to use an efficient URL structure and key your keywords. Target those URLs with keywords that are relevant to your post.

Post title: Directory Critic is a Great Link Building Resource!
Targeted keywords: link building, building backlinks
related keywords: incoming links, link campaign
URL structure: http://www.spunkyjones.com/seo/directory-critic-link-building-resource/
6. Be sure to use a mixture of anchor text when you build your backlinks. This is most important if you have a new or young site under a couple of years old.

You want your anchor text links to appear natural. If they are the same, it could flag the search engines.
7. Put your Java script code near the end of the body “</body>” tag. If you put this code at the beginning of the body “</body>” tag, it will slow down your page loading speed. It is better to have the main part of the page load faster so the end user can view the post while the rest of the page loads.
8. Try to use unique meta tags for each page and each blog post. Avoid using meta tags that are duplicate titles, descriptions. Make sure that your titles and descriptions are relevant to your page and post content.
9. Make sure that you plan your category structure out for SEO. Also, make all of your pages and article accessible within three clicks from your main page.
10. Use an image in your blog posts and include the alt tag. Don’t over do it and keyword stuff.
11. Give your blog time to age and don’t move it over to another Domain. All webmasters make minor mistakes. Therefore, don’t abandoned ship and start completely over.
