Being laid off is sadly becoming a trend. High executives, engineers, retail associates, there is hardly any job security out there. So, what do you do when you become laid off? Here are some roads you may want to take:
Apply for unemployment - This takes time to do the processing, but some money is better than no money. Plus, they offer great guidance on job sites.
Update your resume and start posting them on job sites - The most popular is Career Builder and Monster, but your local newspaper may have resume posting options. Some job sites even email you openings in your area.
Go to a temp agency - You tell them the distance you want to drive, the wage you are willing to take for assignments, and the kind of job you are looking for. They match you to the job and you choose to accept it.
Market yourself through family and friends - As I have said in a previous post, they know what you are good at and what you are not. Network, network, network!
Market yourself in free advertisement sites (For example: Craig's List) - Be careful when you do this to avoid being lead into a scam.
Grab the opportunity - Go back to school, volunteer, start your own business, or do something you are really good at part-time (fixing cars, web design instruction, piano lessons, etc.)
Think outside of the box - Hold a party where guests bring you a job posting they think you would fit into. Did you hear about the woman that posted her cover letter and resume on a t-shirt and wore it everywhere she went? (obviously she was a marketing major)
What tips do you have for the recently (or not so recently) laid off?
