Get Up and Stretch! Ergonomic Tips

Most likely, you are probably at a desk reading this blog.  Are you positioned properly?  Is your work station positioned properly?  If you are like me, you're sitting at a computer doing work at least 4-5 hours a day. Here are some ergonomic tips to help reduce physical strain.

Eyes - Stop rubbing them!  Periodically, look away from the screen and focus on something that is 20 feet away for 20 seconds to give your eyes a rest.  Also, blink often to keep them clean and moist.  Position the monitor 16-29 inches from your eyes and the top line on the screen should be at eye level to prevent strain in your neck.  (Clue: If you keep rubbing the back of your neck, your monitor is too high)

Hands - Your hands, wrists, and forearms should be straight or parallel to the floor while typing.  Never rest your wrists on the keyboard or at the edge of your desk because it creates pressure points.  If you want to rest your hands, rest them on your lap.

Body - Sit up straight and stop slouching!  It helps when placing your lower back right against the chair, it helps the natural curves of your spine support the position for long periods of time.  Arrange work station so items are reachable and heavy binders (you know you have them) should be made into smaller ones.

Legs and Feet - Feet are flat on the floor and there should be space between the chair and the back of your knees.

Although you have a desk job/position, you can still acquire strain and fatigue.  Hope these ergonomic tips will help.  Once again, "Get up and Stretch!"
