Solid state drives, (SSD) definitely have an advantage when it comes to reliability, speed, size and power consumption over platter hardrives. However, the current market place is mainly dependent upon cost per gigabyte, and they aren't able to complete with traditional platter spinning hardrives.
It appears that Western Digital isn't jumping on the (SSD) band wagon at this in time, because there is word of mouth out on the street that "WD" is working on a new 20,000 RPM Western Digital Raptor hardrive to compete against the latest Solids State Drives (SSD).
At this moment, the details are somewhat scarce about the new Western Digital 20K RPM Raptor hardrive. It is said that the new WD Raptor will be available in a 2.5" format and housed in a custom 3.5" enclosure acting as a heatsink, vibration reduction and noise-reduction unit. It is also said, that these new hardrives will be silent, even with the hardrive platters spinning at 20,000 RPM. The speculated price tag for a 300GB model is said to be around $340.00 US currency.
According to sources in Taipei, it is speculated that SSD drives will become affordable within the next 12 to 18 months. Because to this, many hardrive manufactures are concerned about the (SSD) market share and how much it could take away from them!
While a 20,000 RPM hardrive could be designed to be ultra-fast, silent, it is still a mechanical hardrive design that is still prone to power consumption and reliability issues. Let's hope that the big hardrive giant, Western Digital isn't putting too much in one basket!
Spunky Jones.
